VIDEO BY JAMES HUTTON INSTITUTE HIGHLIGHTING THE NORTH EAST OF SCOTLAND. TO SEE VIDEO LINK HERE
In recent years Scotland has got its act together and formalised what were already touring routes. The difference is the information is now much more coordinated. This is good and bad…it means the same places get lots and lots more tourists but if they are not on the route then they rely more on the independant traveller to find them. My suggestion is use these maps as a guide but do your own google searches for the areas you visit and what more to see because if you only stick to the route you will see the highlights but there are so, so many more discoveries and splendours to be found….and you may even loose the larger numbers of tourists who only stick to the route … I say don’t be afraid to go off piste!! See links at the bottom of the page for other Scottish road trips.

“Located in the heart of Speyside, Ballindalloch Castle is also known as ‘The Pearl of the North’ and once you’re here it’s easy to see why! Explore the fine collection of 17th century Spanish paintings, one of the finest house libraries in Scotland, the grand dining room with a magnificent fireplace, the vaulted hall and more. There are also excellent fishing opportunities as the Rivers Spey and Avon run through the estate. Or head to the castle shop to take home some homemade Scottish crafts and goods with you”.
